YOU DO YOU (Lyrics)
(CHORUS)
Your life is yours
mine is mine
crossing our paths
might just be a sign
to understand our differences
it’s okay, it’s fine,
when you do you
and I’m just me
I get to see your perspective
through what you believe
more common ground
might be the gift we both receive
(VERSE 1)
They say you do you
as if I don’t have a clue
that my own choices have nothing to do
with how they see life
or the things they would choose
maybe a slight, maybe in kind,
whichever they meant
I do it for me,
my heart’s in the right place
it’s not meant selfishly
(PRE-CHORUS)
You do you
I’ll sometimes say
to acknowledge our differences,
don’t take it the wrong way
like sometimes I do,
I really only want you to be you
(VERSE 2)
I see you and
you see me
we’re not the same
in what we believe
but somewhere somehow
we were destined to meet
this shrinking world saved us a seat
to see those viewpoints
that shaped our beliefs
(PRE-CHORUS)
You do you
I’ll sometimes say
to acknowledge our differences,
don’t take it the wrong way
like sometimes I do,
I really only want you to be you
(CHORUS)
Your life is yours
mine is mine
crossing our paths
might just be a sign
to understand our differences,
it’s okay, it’s fine,
when you do you
and I’m just me
I get to see your perspective
through what you believe
more common ground
might be the gift we both receive
(BRIDGE)
You may go your way
I may go mine
but for one fleeting moment
our paths were aligned
whether we become a part
of each other’s life
It’s not about wrong or right,
stay forever
stay for tonight
stay for a minute
it’s perfectly fine
if we merely cross paths
for just one moment in time
(CHORUS OUTRO)
You do you
I’ll sometimes say
to acknowledge our differences,
don’t take it the wrong way
like sometimes I do,
I really only want
you to be you

THE STORY BEHIND THE LYRICS
The expression “you do you” has become something of a cliché. In fact, one of the main reasons I decided to write these lyrics is that I mostly find the phrase annoying. Often, it’s used in a dismissive, sarcastic, or “whatever” context. It’s frequently used to end a conversation rather than to engage in one. I’ve used the expression myself, but not in a derogatory way. Of course, it’s the tone and intent that distinguish the meaning.
However, I wanted to flip that narrative. I wrote this song from the perspective that those three words carry a hidden duality. Depending on the intent behind them, “you do you” can be a generous, freeing statement. It can mean that I honor your path, I respect our differences, and I am genuinely okay with you being exactly who you are.
This song explores that tension. It is a reflection on the complexity of human interaction and the famous idea that people come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Whether an encounter is long-lasting or fleeting, there is value in the intersection. We learn from every person we meet, from the challenges and the joys alike, and I wanted to capture the beauty in that process.
I keep a notebook of lyric ideas I want to explore, and this theme has been on my mind for a long time. For whatever reason, today was the day the words finally landed on the page and came to life.
My hope is that you find this song uplifting. Despite its origins in a phrase I usually find frustrating, it is, at its heart, a message about finding common ground and the beauty of simply crossing paths.
