THE STORY BEHIND THE LYRICS:

I wanted to write lyrics and set them to music about the relationship between a father and son. To do that, I drew on multiple relationships in my own life to find the words I wanted to say.

This song includes thoughts and feelings that could apply to my own relationship with my father as his daughter. They could also apply to the relationships between my father and my brothers, and to the fathers and sons within our own family today. As a daughter, I wanted to capture the many layers of a father-son relationship from a positive, heartfelt perspective.

To do that, I drew inspiration from the relationships that surround me. I am the mother of several sons, have two brothers, and have spent my life observing the unique bond between fathers and their boys. It is a relationship that carries its own language, often spoken more through actions than words.

Once I found the direction I wanted to take, I decided to approach the lyric from the perspective of a father who feels blessed beyond measure by the son who entered his life. He looks at this remarkable young man and quietly wonders how he deserves such a gift. Like most people, he has not lived a perfect life.

I wanted to write about a father who sees his son not only as someone he teaches, but as someone who changes him in return.

In this story, the little boy who grows into a man helps his father discover parts of himself he may have hidden for years. Through his son’s kindness, optimism, forgiveness, and ability to see the good in people, he becomes a better man. The son becomes one of life’s greatest teachers.
