HOLD THEM WHILE THEY’RE LITTLE (Lyrics)
(PRE CHORUS)
Hold them while they’re little
hold them while you can
you’re the hero in their story
You’re where it all began
[Verse 1]
Tiny shoes by the door,
grass stains on their knees,
Crayon art pinned to the fridge
for everyone to see,
Little hands holding yours,
tears you wipe away,
those leaping hugs they give you
at the end of busy days,
these are the moments that will fade
from babies to teen years
you’ll never really notice
their tiny hands grow
and disappear
(CHORUS)
One day it’s bubble baths,
bedtime stories, and sing-a-longs,
It’s moments filled with one last snack,
then waking up at dawn,
when will we get there,
with a thousand questions
that end in why,
will seem like never-ending conversations
until the day they’ve all passed by
(VERSE 2)
Fingerprints on windows
will get wiped away a thousand times,
You’ll watch their favorite shows,
And repeat those nursery rhymes,
there will never be another moment
like these ones that will float by,
as they’re cuddled in your lap
it could be the last time,
(PRE CHORUS)
Hold them while they’re little
hold them while you can
you’re the hero in their story
You’re where it all began
(CHORUS)
One day it’s bubble baths,
bedtime stories, and sing-a-longs
It’s moments filled with one last snack,
then waking up at dawn,
when will we get there,
with a thousand questions
that end in why,
will seem like never-ending conversations
until the day they’ve all passed by
(BRIDGE)
One day will come that silence
you wished for on tired days,
one day that missed school bus
will be a memory that just fades,
busy holiday mornings will be featured
in photographs,
you’ll only get to remember
those special morning laughs,
giant leaps off swings
will be something in the past,
so soak up every memory
of their childhood
while it lasts
(OUTRO CHORUS)
Hold them while they’re little
hold them while you can
this is your special time to share
you won’t get another chance
THE STORY BEHIND THE LYRICS
A Message to Young Moms: I could almost see their little shoes by the door, and tiny knees marked with grass stains. Fingerprints on the windows. Little hands reaching for mine. The familiar chaos of bath time, evening snacks, pajamas, and bedtime stories that somehow stretched into an hour or more because neither of us was quite ready for the day to end.
As an older Mom, with grown-up kids, I began to write these lyrics.
Sitting there, with all those years between then and now, I was struck by something I had always known: childhood doesn’t announce when it’s leaving. One ordinary day becomes the last bath, the last bedtime story, the last little hand reaching for yours, and you don’t know it’s the last.
My children grew up. Life moved forward. The little people who once needed me for everything became grown, with lives and stories of their own.
But sitting at that table as I wrote these words, they were little again.
These aren’t just lyrics; they’re a piece of a life I’ve lived.
This song is for every mother who has held those little hands, dried those tears, listened to one more bedtime story, and wished she could slow time down just a little.
For every mother who has loved them through every step of the journey, and hopes that somewhere in their grown-up hearts, they will always know just how deeply they are loved.
Young Moms, this is our message from older Moms (although most of you know this, I’m sure) – soak in their childhood; it goes faster than this song can possibly explain.
