I USED TO BE BRAVE (Lyrics)
(PRE CHORUS)
I’m peeking at my life
through frosted glass
I open the door
eyes wide through the crack
there’s still no way
I can’t look at that
(VERSE 1)
With the door slammed shut
I think not today
I’ll stay in my shell
until maybe I’m brave
knowing that’s impossible
unless I change my ways
I stare at that door as it’s calling my name
“Screaming girl, step outside
that’s all that I’m saying”
The skies are blue on the other side
but I cling to this liminal state in my mind
(CHORUS)
The in-between is the trap where I live
my history has proven I’m braver than this
the flowers in bloom
the park is fresh green
but I still hide in myself
I prefer being unseen
people don’t understand
why I’m afraid,
they see the old me
the one that used to be brave,
everything I had to give
I already gave,
there are no rules
when you live inside of this place
(VERSE 2)
Don’t cry for me I’m actually okay
I think this is my version
of pent-up rage
I’m not angry in the traditional way
just upset at myself
for letting it get to this stage
hear this again, I’m actually okay
I just need this time
to accept all this change
(PRE CHORUS)
I’m peeking at my life
through frosted glass
I open the door
eyes wide through the crack
there’s still no way
I can’t look at that
(CHORUS)
The in-between is the trap where I live
my history has proven I’m braver than this
the flowers in bloom
the park is fresh green
but I still hide in myself
I prefer being unseen
people don’t understand
why I’m afraid,
they see the old me
the one that used to be brave,
everything I had to give
I already gave,
there are no rules
when you live inside of this place
(BRIDGE)
I don’t want to move forward
I don’t want to move back
so I’m stuck in this place
until I know where I’m at
there’s too much unknown
for me to let go
to open that door even if I don’t know
but deep in my soul
there is a safe space
that nothing can touch
no matter my state
(OUTRO CHORUS)
Still peeking out
at my life,
I open the door
eyes wide through the crack,
I stepped outside
would you look at that,
the sky really is blue
the park emerald green,
I’m getting closer to daring
myself to be seen
THE STORY BEHIND THE LYRICS:
She doesn’t want to move forward. She doesn’t want to move back. She doesn’t even want to stay in one place. The liminality of her mind puzzles her. Why is she like this? Why doesn’t she have all the answers? If someone would just give her a clue as to what she should do. If someone could reach out and grab her hand and say, here, step through this door. This is the way. She spent her whole life believing she had clarity. But if she was so clear, why did she travel to this liminal space?
Was she brave? She used to be brave. Was she protecting herself? Was she protecting others? She was confused, but didn’t know she was confused. She was lost, but didn’t know she was lost. She was hopeful and always knew herself to be hopeful. But was that just her way of staying stuck? Grasping onto hope and only hope?
If these are your feelings, then these lyrics tell your story.
