The Story Behind the Lyrics

I wrote these lyrics on January 12, 2026, and they are completely original.

Having been married for nearly 40 years and together with my husband for close to 45, I often think about couples who find each other later in life. Not the young couples just starting out, but those who have already lived, loved, lost, and grown—sometimes through one marriage, sometimes through more—and never expected to find love again.

Last First Dance was inspired by the image of a couple standing together on the dance floor, carrying all that life has already taught them. The lyrics capture the idea that they didn’t think they needed anyone anymore, that experience had made them wiser, and yet love found them anyway—not through searching, but through the serendipity of their journeys and all they had learned along the way.

This song tells the story of two people who weren’t expecting another beginning but discovered a deep, unexpected love. That’s why this dance feels like a “last first dance.” When love arrives unplanned, it carries a unique truth—one rooted in acceptance, balance, and genuine connection.

My aim was to create a first dance wedding song specifically for remarried or later-in-life couples—a song that honors their past, celebrates what they’ve learned, and highlights the quiet certainty of choosing each other now.
