Today, December 15th, 2025, I wrote the lyrics to A Borrowed Map. Every word came from a very real place inside of me. At 65 years old, I’ve been writing since I was eight, and somehow, over 57 years later, the words are pouring out like they’ve been waiting for this exact moment. **Listen on Spotify, iTunes, or Amazon:** iTunes & Amazon are affiliate links.
The Borrowed Map
[Verse 1]
I read a borrowed map
following directions
that were never mine,
having no idea
that I was too young
to read those unquestioned lines,
I took the roads I believed were me,
and unwittingly created my history,
Was I careless? Or was I blind?
Not knowing my true self,
as I faithfully ignored the signs
[Chorus]
It’s healthy to assess our choices,
And grieve the loss
of what could have been,
so long as we acknowledge
It was always a road unseen
Beyond those bends we twist and turn
and traveling those paths is how we learned
[Verse 2]
I chased the echoes of a life
That someone else drew for me,
A silent, internal strife
Of morphing myself to agree.
I wore the painted face they preferred,
And spoke the lines I thought they heard,
But deep inside, the compass spun,
quietly seeking my truth in the sun
[Chorus]
It’s healthy to assess our choices,
And grieve the loss
of what could have been,
so long as we acknowledge
It was always a road unseen
Beyond those bends we twist and turn
and traveling those paths is how we learned
[Verse 3]
Am I seeking a vintage compass
its needles rusted without direction?
Because yesteryear has long since passed
and now lives without correction
So letting go is how to read my map
As I plunge forward on my authentic path
[Chorus]
It’s healthy to assess our choices,
And grieve the loss
of what could have been,
so long as we acknowledge
It was always a road unseen
Beyond those bends we twist and turn
and traveling those paths is how we learned
[Bridge]
The miles that I traveled were never in vain,
They taught me the shelter, they taught me the rain.
I honor the child that followed those lines,
But now I can read all the relevant signs.
The map was borrowed, but the history is mine.
[Outro]
I have questioned the shadows that governed my time,
And cleared the horizon for the real map that is mine.
What is A Borrowed Map About:
On December 15, 2025, the lyrics for A Borrowed Map found their way onto the page. They arrived honestly, drawn from years of living, questioning, and becoming. Now in my mid-sixties, I realize I’ve been shaping words since childhood, and after decades of experience, they still arrive with urgency — as if they’ve been patiently waiting for me to be ready to hear them.
This piece grew from reflection. From looking back at the directions I once followed without fully understanding where they might lead. Like many of us, I spent early years navigating routes influenced by expectation, approval, and the desire to fit into someone else’s vision. And yet, along the way, something uniquely mine was formed.
A Borrowed Map speaks to that realization — that even when we begin by tracing lines drawn by others, the journey itself teaches us who we are. The wrong turns, the pauses, the quiet resistance, and the eventual clarity all shape a life that becomes unmistakably our own.
These lyrics are a nod to the unraveling and the becoming. To recognizing the paths that never quite fit, and to the moment we finally choose to walk forward guided by our own inner compass. If these words echo something familiar for you, then they’ve done exactly what they were meant to do.
