Mom’s Pickles and Beets (Lyrics)
(PRE-CHORUS)
The first day of fall
brings you back to me
Mom, I think about you
making pickles and beets
preparing for the season
filling our freezer with treats
(VERSE 1)
I see you standing in the kitchen
as I walk through the door
with those motherly instructions
“don’t leave your books on the floor”
mason jars on the counter,
and the cellar shelf full,
on those crispy fall days
I just couldn’t wait
to sit by the fire
after I finished my skate
(CHORUS)
Time is a funny thing
when you’re a young girl
you never truly understand
how your mom is your world
You wake up and she’s there
As you start your day
getting breakfast in bellies
before you get on your way
“Mom can you drive me, I’m going to be late”
with the roll of her eyes,
and a quick spoken “yes”
“You know I won’t always be here to fix every mess”
(VERSE 2)
But during those years
mom was always there,
and when the crisp fall weather
filled the air,
it was blankets, soups
and favorite TV shows,
looking back on that time
I’m glad I stayed home,
No hanging out those nights
with any of my friends,
those were special times with my mother,
I had no idea they would end
(PRE-CHORUS)
The first day of fall
brings you back to me
Mom I think about you
making pickles and beets
preparing for the season
filling our freezer with treats
(CHORUS)
Time is a funny thing
when you’re a young girl
you never truly understand
how your mom is your world
You wake up and she’s there
As you start your day
getting breakfast in bellies
before you get on your way
“Mom can you drive me, I’m going to be late”
with the roll of her eyes,
and a quick spoken “yes”
“You know I won’t always be here to fix every mess”
(BRIDGE)
Fall is upon us
as we begin to close another year
many seasons have passed
And Mom’s no longer here,
I think about those days
When I’d walk in the door
and get that motherly look
about my books on the floor
I miss her so much
It doesn’t matter how much time goes by
our beautiful memories
are forever etched in my mind
(PRE OUTRO-CHORUS)
The first day of fall
brings you back to me
(OUTRO CHORUS)
The first day of fall
brings you back to me
Mom I think about you
making those pickles and beets
preparing for the season
filling our freezer with treats
Thank you so much for being there for me
THE STORY BEHIND THE LYRICS:
As the crisp air of September 1975 settles in, I feel that familiar anticipation of the upcoming changing autumn season. It is back-to-school, skating lessons, and my absolute favorite time of the year. September always feels like another chance, a new beginning.
Walking through the front door after a long day, I’m greeted by the wonderful smell of spices and homemade soup simmering on the stove. Rows of mason jars packed with pickles and beets sit on the counter. I head straight for the fireplace to warm up, and soon Mom is asking me to run down to the basement to fold the laundry and to grab some fudge on my way up.
Of course, there were those mornings when I overslept and had to rush, asking, “Mom, can you drive me? I’m going to be late!” With a classic roll of her eyes and a quick, spoken “yes,” she would add, “You know, I won’t always be here to fix every mess.”
Over fifty years have passed since that time. When fall approaches, those memories always come rushing back. The aroma of her cooking, the cozy evenings at home, and the deep comfort of her presence are part of the air that I breathe.
These lyrics, this song, tells that story.
