BACK IN THE DAY (Lyrics)
(PRE CHORUS)
Wearing denim with ironed pleats
Riding bikes with banana seats
out all day on our ten-speed
rocking out to songs by Queen
(CHORUS)
We had lava lamps and cool pet rocks
we wore cut-off shorts and halter tops
feathered hair was everywhere
we danced on floors with light-up squares
it was disco balls and playing pong
and scream-alongs to hard rock songs
(VERSE 1)
I Remember laughing all night long
a morning dance to my favorite song
the way the sun lit up the floor
making breakfast we’d dance some more
those vinyl scratches skipped some beats
but it never stopped our dancing feet
(VERSE 2)
Pinball machines were all the rage
we were at the arcade, or on roller skates
There were paper maps in the glove box
that’s how we got around
so we wouldn’t get lost
Muscle cars and guys with long hair
Were sometimes our parents’ worst nightmare
(PRE CHORUS)
Wearing denim with ironed pleats
Riding bikes with banana seats
out all day on our ten-speed
rocking out to songs by Queen
(CHORUS)
We had lava lamps and cool pet rocks
we wore cut-off shorts and halter tops
feathered hair was everywhere
we danced on floors with light-up squares
it was disco balls and playing pong
and scream-alongs to hard rock songs
(BRIDGE)
Back in the day we were pretty far out
Foxy and hip and even dynamite
we gave our approval with “outta sight”
rotary phones with twenty-foot cords
to talk in private around the corner
No cell phones, no internet,
it was the decade Voyager left,
all what was possible
hadn’t happened yet
(OUTRO CHORUS)
It’s bittersweet
to see so many changes
we hold onto what was
but still let it go
we know of a time
our children won’t know
you had to be there,
or so they say,
to understand what it was like
back in the day

THE STORY BEHIND THE LYRICS:
Being active on social media lately, I have noticed a lot of reflection and genuine nostalgia for the 70s. It is my generation, the decade when I was a teenager and, truly, some of the best years of my life. I felt like it was time to write a song that highlights all the aspects of that era; it is a fun echo of yesterday and a way to honor the absolute uniqueness of that time.
When you look back at the 70s, the memories are so distinct. Whether it is photos or memorabilia, you can always pinpoint exactly what belongs to that decade. It had a visual and cultural fingerprint like no other.
For me, the music was everything. There was such a massive range, from the softer, melodic side all the way to the raw energy of hard rock, which was really front and center back then. It was also a fascinating time to grow up because it felt like the final chapter before the massive technology boom took over. Life felt a little more tactile and a little more human.
And, of course, the style! You cannot talk about the 70s without mentioning the fashion. From cut-off shorts and halter tops to iconic jumpsuits and pantsuits, the colors and silhouettes were just incredible.
“Back in the Day” is my love letter to that time. I hope this song takes you back to those moments, those sounds, and that specific feeling of freedom that defined our youth.
