If you are a parent, this song was written for you to cherish every fleeting moment shared with your daughter.
TIME WITH OUR DAUGHTER (Lyrics)
(VERSE 1)
She twirls on her toes
She wants to go where mom goes
she loves pink dresses
and unicorns,
and paints what she knows
pictures of dad with funny blue hair
mom pins that Picasso to the fridge
so she can show her little girl
that she loves what she did
(PRE CHORUS)
Rainbows and swimming
Skipping and swings
are the map to her heart
and those big sunny grins
(CHORUS)
Mom and dad knowing
how fast she is growing
reminds them to slow down
on those busy days,
curling up with cuddles
always stops time
so now it’s stories and giggles
and silly nursery rhymes
“Mom please read this”
she says leaping into bed
Mom looks at the book,
and laughs, “not again”
but with a kiss on the cheek
she reads it again
(VERSE 2)
She’s growing taller everyday
her shoes have gone from
infant to toddler, to a cute little girl’s,
her baby clothes stored
they’ll never get anymore twirls,
So now it’s ballet outfits
and two-wheeled bikes,
and those special requests
to stay up later at night
(PRE CHORUS)
Rainbows and swimming
Skipping and swings
are the map to her heart
and those big sunny grins
(CHORUS)
Mom and dad knowing
how fast she is growing
reminds them to slow down
on those busy days,
curling up with cuddles
always stops time
so now it’s stories and giggles
and silly nursery rhymes
“Mom please read this”
she says leaping into bed
Mom looks at the book,
and laughs, “not again”
but with a kiss on the cheek
she reads it again
(BRIDGE)
One day story time
will come to an end,
she’ll be heading out
to the movies
with just her best friends,
So mom and dad order time to stop,
they sweep her in their arms,
twirling around on the spot,
their sweet little girl is all theirs for now,
it’s time to laugh while they sing
and dance all around
(OUTRO CHORUS)
Rainbows and swimming
Skipping and swings
fill mom and dads day
with the most important things,
time with their daughter
means everything

THE STORY BEHIND THE LYRICS:
Sometimes a song ends up telling a different story than the one I originally set out to write. My intention was to create a lyrical keepsake for my granddaughters that celebrated the wonder of childhood. As the lyrics unfolded, however, the story naturally became one told from the perspective of a mother and father watching their daughter grow up far too quickly.
Although this song is for every parent and grandparent who understands both the joy and the bittersweet reality of seeing a little girl grow, it is also deeply personal. Many of the images throughout the lyrics—the ballet outfits, the unicorns, and the tiny shoes—were inspired by one of my granddaughters. She became the inspiration behind much of this story.
One part of the song comes directly from my own life. The lyric, “Mom, please read this…” followed by, “Mom looks at the book and laughs, ‘not again’,” is based on a real memory from more than 40 years ago with my son. He had one favorite book that he wanted me to read night after night. I still have that book, and it remains one of my most treasured possessions.
My hope is that this song brings a smile to those raising children today and to those remembering those years with love. If it encourages someone to slow down, enjoy the stories, the laughter, and the everyday moments that pass so quickly, then it has done exactly what I hoped it would do.
Thank you for allowing me to share this small piece of my heart with you.
