MAMA I CAN’T FIX IT (Lyrics)
[Verse 1]
I watched you in the kitchen
Trying to lift that small plate
it hurt to see you struggle
To do the basic things each day
To me you were the bravest
with everything you had to face
You’d always say “I’m fine”
knowing that wasn’t the case
[Pre-Chorus]
From home to hospitals
you tried to hide your pain
You didn’t want us to worry
My heart was breaking
just the same
[Chorus]
Mama, I can’t fix it
I can’t make this go away
I can only hold your hand now
while you whisper “I’m ok”
I was grateful to just be there
to maybe get another day
Mama I can’t fix it
I want to take us back in time
to when I was a little girl
and you were in your prime
[Verse 2]
Your chair seemed miles away
You leaned on me for stairs
Every little movement hurt you
I remember being so scared
The ache inside my heart
never left me during that time
Watching you slip away
and watching you decline
was impossible for me
so again you’d say “I’m fine”
[Pre-Chorus]
Just being in the room
watching some TV
was all that we could do then
and that was enough for me
[Chorus]
Mama, I can’t fix it
I can’t make this go away
I can only hold your hand now
while you whisper “I’m ok”
I was grateful to just be there
to maybe get another day
Mama I can’t fix it
I want to take us back in time
to when I was a little girl
and you were in your prime
[Bridge]
You said “sit with me a minute”
How about we have a tea
there was no other
place on earth
that I would rather be
just to sit with you
was enough for me
So we sat there in the stillness
your hands so paper thin
I held them for one last time
knowing I never will again
[Chorus/Outro]
Mama I couldn’t fix it
I wanted to take us back in time
when I was a little girl
and you were in your prime
But I know dad’s happy to see you
he will hold your hand
and I will hold your heart
until we’re together again

THE STORY BEHIND THE LYRICS:
I wrote and produced this piece on May 30, 2026. Of all the songs I have written, this one is among the most personal. It tells the story of my mother’s final chapter in life and closely reflects what I experienced as I watched her health gradually decline.
The lyrics are drawn from real moments and genuine emotions. One detail I knew I had to include was what I often call my mother’s generation, the “I’m fine” generation. No matter how she was truly feeling, she would often insist that she was fine. Those words became familiar to our family, even when we all knew they were not entirely true.
Writing this song was emotionally difficult. There were tears as I worked on the lyrics, and again when I created the storyboard that brought the story to life visually. Some songs allow you to step into someone else’s shoes. This one required me to revisit my own memories.
Although the song is deeply rooted in my personal experience, I know it reflects the journey of countless mothers, daughters, sons, and families who have faced the painful reality of watching a loved one fade. It is a chapter of life that many of us eventually encounter, yet it never becomes easier.
Caring for an aging or seriously ill parent involves far more than the practical responsibilities. Alongside the caregiving comes the gradual realization that the person you love may not recover. Accepting that truth can be one of the most painful experiences a person faces. At the same time, it can also be one of the greatest acts of love and honor to simply be present, offering comfort, support, and companionship during those final days.
If you are walking this path now or have walked it before, my heart is with you. I hope this song brings a sense of understanding, comfort, and connection, and reminds you that you are not alone.
